Been trying to get the old tiller fired up. Pulled head, cleaned valves,
replaced carb (cheaper than rebuilding). Got it all back together, new spark plug and no friggin spark. Tore it all the way down again only to find the coil/module whatever you wanna call it is toast. 3 more days of waiting for a new part.

Check my local parts places 35 - 40 for working used 65 for new but will be 2-3 days to get it, Bought my new one online $24 be here Wed or Thursday.

I Guess I am being punished for not checking for spark before I started.

Saturday I changed O2 sensors in my car cause wife wanted to take it PA on a trip, Been having occasional check engine lights and always same code,, down stream O2 sensor. Not a real difficult fix other than taking seat out to get to wiring harness. Sitting here now licking my wounded knuckles (3 total) and gouged finger (1) and thinking I should have gone fishing.

Prices stores are charging is getting way out of hand. The O2 sensor was 69.99 could have bought online for $40. There is even a company on ebay selling a set (up stream and downstream) for 54.00 for both. Of course the dealer quote to replace the part (took me 4 hours) was $438.00. Looking at what it is, not much more than changing a spark plug (hahahahahaha). If only it were that simple.

Anyhow shakedown cruise yesterday (150 mile round trip) ran fine gas MPG much better +7MPG and a bit of extra ooomph when you hit the accelerator.

Stores are getting greedy, everyone tries to destroy your confidence and tell you you cant do it, better have a pro do it. Time to man up and think it thru. Plan ahead, be proactive and those sensor things that should be replaced and often arent until they fail. may be worth including in your plans. Gas hitting 4 bucks a gallon again, a few bucks on some sensor and an afternoon of knuckle busting may be well worth it.

Insurance companies making them say that. In reality, 90% of it's easy to do, the other 10% they're right, let a pro do it - special tools, tricks, etc.

My puny little tiller started on the 3rd pull this year, got half the garden turned last night. :)

Sure wish i knew more of the little DIY things to be able to fix at home on cars, but do tend to leave the vast majority to those who know more than i. Have bad luck in general with vehicles. Was very happy when we were able to find a little fuel economic car for myself that does not have all the bells and whistles that tend to fail and do nothing more than make our younger generations lazy and cost us money to fix. No auto locks, no power windows, no power seat, no heated mirrors or seats, no back-up sensors or cameras, no cruise and not anti-lock brakes. However, almost had to learn how to drive on ice again this winter since i have driven a car WITH anti-lock brakes for so long. World of difference there. Was the first time my children had ever seen 'crank' windows and they still make fun every time they get in. It makes me smile.

"Hey, whatever happened to waitin' your turn
Doing it all by hand,
'Cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seemed so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic"

Ronnie, I have my own code scanner probably the best 150 I've spent. 90% of the new items you refer to are plug-n-play if you will. Trying to find the right one is easy if you have a scanner. Now getting to it to change it out is a different story. I started DIY repair when I was 5 years old. My dad was rebuilding a '56 ford and he would set me in the engine compartment and let me wrench away.

I was happy as could be but learned a lot and did not get in trouble for getting dirty.

Newer cars >2000 are a bit of a challenge but fundamentally they are the same as they have always been just more bells and whistles. You do need some more advanced tools and a few specialty items but I have found that more often than not even if you need to buy a special tool, you are money ahead. Service manuals spell out test procedures and follow directions and you will be fine.

X 2 on what Attica said . I drive a Chevy Sprint noth'in on the inside and only 3 cylinders under the hood. I absolutely hate working on cars . Not that I can't . Along with that goes the fact when people find out you can fix them, then they are always wanting you to . That being said Kdog ole buddy I got this ----- Ya think ---- money--- Iain't got no money ! LOL

the local car place has the computer you can borrow and just plug and play. New cars may be a pain to work on but dang they seem to run a lot longer than those I remember. Chilton's manual for all of my vehicles though.

Agree with just replacing the carb on the small engine. You cant even find small engine repair kits around anymore and the carbs are under $75 new. Just did one on my mulcher/shredder.

As for the gardening, I went to raised beds several years back and will never run a traditional garden again.:D
