Ok this is sure to raise some ruffles LOL. My wife asked me tonight - you used to tie only a few different colors and always brought fish home but now you've spent 100% more on materials than you ever did before.

She's also seen the paint jobs and ties here. She thinks it's becoming more complicated than it needs to be.

So sound off guys WHAT SAY YOU?????????????? Are we or aren't we??

Probably, but it's a hobby I do to have fun as much as to catch fish.

Some people buy expensive sports cars, then never take them to the track. Why do people buy a Ferrari when they can't even legally drive half the car's top speed? Why not buy a Civic or Corolla instead? Because they want to drive a Ferrari.

Some people have model trains and build extensive tracks complete with tunnels and landscape decor like little plastic people and animals. Way more than you need to have a train go around a loop of track. Why do they spend all that time and money making all that? Because it's fun to build and they get a kick out of it.

I know someone who is into making beadwork jewelery, and her collection of materials and equipment has taken over an entire room in her house.

BTW, I'm a woman and I think I own about half a dozen pairs of shoes total. Half of them are sandals. One is a pair of sneakers. One is a pair of insulated boots I only wear while fishing. I have one pair of formal dress shoes, which are a pair of black flats. At 6'2" I don't need heels. :D

The old jigs still work, but where I live there is a lot of fishing pressure and I like fishing with something the fish havn't seen before. Unfortunately, a lot of people here don't follow regulations and keep everything they catch even though they are not regulation size or catch multiple daily limits when they get into them good. The tougher it gets the more I have to refine my techniques so I'm looking for any edge I can get. The closer I can get to the real thing without buying it the happier I am.

Personally my opinion is we do way more than necessary just to catch fish. My first jigs I tied way back when caught fish. I never thought about getting better until I stumbled across forum on CDC. Kept looking at pix and drooling.

I am never satisfied with my finished product now. I keep trying different methods and materials. Read avidly on here and all over the web. Lot of my inspiration comes from the guys and gals on this site.

Probably 80% of my ideas never pan out. But the 20% that do keeps me young at heart anyway. I think its human nature to try and improve on anything that they do. Be it tying jigs or building a better car.

It's called art. To us it is anyway. Fish don't care anywhere near as much as we do. It's the challenge of making our skills better and better. Creativity.
Fish don't get up close and think "wow, what a great veined paint job you have". The base colors set off the Strike mode, and it eats.

Careful on that train reference, that is my second favorite thing to do, train layouts. If I only had the room and time to do it.

It is one of the last true forms of folk art . Derived first out of necessity in the quest for food . When you lay your hand to a bobbin and vise you have begun to express yourself in this art form . There are no starving artists among jig tiers as long as fish are in the water . Does it justify the cost . HECK YES!!!

Fatman, you're lucky to have a wife to KISS - mine always "makes things more complicated than it needs to be".

On the subject of shoes, I ditched my pair of dressers after my parents passed on. Well, actually they were Chinese counterfeit Florsheims which fell apart after 2 wearings, & never replaced em.

She is absolutely correct!!! We all know what we have caught them on in the past. Most of us took the leap with a simple vise and maybe four basic colors. And now I have more jigs than I will ever be able to fish with, joined yet another jig swap, and dang it, Robert better hurry and call me back so I can order some more stuff!!! Whew, I need a drink!!! :)

The new boss at work won't allow personal mail to be delivered anymore, but I'm trying to get him to change his mind.

I see jig and fly tying as my art... For fishing, I use half a dozen or so color combinations day in and day out. Maybe 10 flies...maybe.

To me Toadfrog is right we are artist. What paint artist just has three colors or one brush. If I wanted to catch fish I would need only about three basic colors of material. But if I want to make great jigs I need a whole range of colors and types of materials to create great looking jigs to be pleasing to me and to still catch fish. It is not just the fish it is me too not to mention all of you.

Folk art. That's so true. We sculpt, we paint. 3D and 2D. Shape and colour. Our art moves through water. And we have to make our art become alive. We have our own art critics _ and ours have fins. How damn cool is that?
It's fun to tie both simple and bling jigs.
Love this thread and every reply.
