Looking for longer than average bucktail

There is a jig that has been very popular in professional bass tournament circuit. The were three major tournaments won with this jig last year. Pictures below. Its called a preacher jig. I put some pictures below. I have been trying to make them but mine aren't quite as long as the original which, by the way, costs $16 each. The are sold by Bass Pro Shop and Mann's Bait Co. They are from 6" to 7" long. I bought one to compare and I'm having trouble finding bucktail a little longer than average.I'd like to get bucktail from 4" to 5" long. I can get a few hairs that long from what I have but not enough that extend that far. The bulk of the hairs are from 2.5 to 3" behind the tie. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd take a look at Moose Hair or Moose mane.

The preacher Jigs I remember from the 80's had some (3 or 4) long hackle feathers and I was never 100% sure they were bucktail as getting bucktail in that length was very difficult especially in Alabama which is where the jig originated.

You can sort a bunch of tails and find a few with 4" and longer hair but that is assuming to can look thru a couple hundred. Some of the synthetics are getting close and you may want to look at a bunch of them.

Let us know if you find a reliable source for long haired buck tails

Another option you may want to look at for hair that length is Icelandic Sheep .

It's nice stuff - traded some away and wish now I hadn't. Another one to look for is Yak hair which is really long

Thanks everyone! I think I have found some large northern ducktails in the length I need. I think I might try some of that moose hair sometime also. You have been great help.

Have 10 tails from 2014 season......Il has cold weather. You can buy a bucktail from Cabelas, Barlow, Crazy Angler. IL are twice the size. You need help shout a PM my way
