Come on guys, it's time to get in touch with your girly side. Seriously, even though I'm a lady, I never got into the whole makeup thing. I never bought nail polish until I started painting jigs.

I mainly use nail polish for touching up powder paint jobs that didn't cover the head completely. I've found LA Colors black is a near perfect match for Pro-Tec black. Of course, since this is nail polish, they don't actually call it black. They call it Circuit. Great for dotting pupils with the brush too.

The LA Colors top/base coat clear is a great top coat on jigs too. It's dry to the touch in about an hour, but takes about 24 hours to cure completely. I bought several bottles and transferred the contents to a small jar. I use it on jigs with stick on eyes by dipping them into the stuff. Gives the jigs a nice shiny finish, and once it's cured it sets up like concrete. Plus it doesn't change the color of some paints like some other top coats do.

I buy both at the dollar store. Can't beat the price.

The dollar stores are my favorite haunts for nail polish. My favorite is the sparkle silver. After testing my jigs in the aquarium test tank. I noticed the the silver sparkle kinda resembled the flash given off my scales on the live minnows.

Will the fish think enough of it to " seal the deal " ? Who knows but dadgum they sure look pretty in my jig box.

I've found a few colors that are basically glitter suspended in a clear base. Is it one of those? On some the glitter is very, very fine and there's so much it makes the liquid opaque. On others the flakes are bigger and the liquid is still clear.

The latter type is great for dipping jigs with a base coat. I've got some blue and some green of this type. They look awesome over chart green and robins egg blue PP.

The only drawbacks to nail polish are it's not plastic safe and it bubbles when baked, so you have to apply it after the final cure. I keep my plastics and handmade jigs in separate containers.

Never got into the nail polish but I've used alot of Testors paints and after two coats of that and a good coat of 2 part epoxy plastics don't hurt it!!! Takes longer but I do some this way, but now that I've been given some lessons on how to use the clear, part color and LOTS of glitter I've been trying them with the powder paint.

Now If what you got is working for you stick with it!!! It's all good!

I got into nail polish the last few weeks. Mary Lou got me into a green color that I wanted for some Flash Ducks. From there it was a bit of a down hill slide for me. Quint then sent me a jig with a copper color with glitter and now I have about 8 bottles of nail polish. I am surprised that it goes as far as it does. I found one that even glows in the dark. The Dollar Stores and CVS is where I get most of my polish have. I went so far as to go with the wife when she get her nails done and look over all the polish that they have. The little viet namese lady that runs the shop thought that I was a little off for showing great interest in the polish. But was very tolerate and let me be for check out all the colors.

Most of my colors don't need a base coat but are solid silver /glitter, gold/ glitter, green,copper/glitter ect. They do a good job I am pleased and will keep using it.

Polish comes in soooooooo many colors!!!!! Can even find chartruese and LOTS of pinks, but as Shoe said, it all has odd-ball names. The glitter mixes are excellent. There is a color called Angel Baby that is small diamater silver holo. glitter in clear polish that is excellent. You can also find some colors that have an iradescent (sp?) or pearl coloring to them where they appear different colors depending on what angle you look at it.

If i paint the entire head with polish, i always use 2 top coats of Sally's Hard as Nails clear coat. It gives a pretty hard coat. I also let them sit over night before i put the 2nd top coat on to be sure it is completley dry.

To help the bottle of polish last longer and not get stringy/sticky..... keep them OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT! I have also read it helps to keep the bottles in the refrigator - but have not tried that one.

Watch eBay for FP - specially Sally Hanson clear..

Swapmeet/fleamarket is good for weird cheap stuff.

I use the clear as a topcoat over the 3-d eyes. I have access to a ton of colors between my better half and daughter but I havn't played too much with it, I like my powder paints and can get about any color I want with a little mixing.

I would say maybe. I have gotten some cheap (~$1) clear top coat at a Dollar Store and it was not worth a dollar - even with 2-3 coats. I just always go straight to the Sallys and get it since i am familar with how well it works.

Nice looking heads. I have a good mix of colors and use them when I can't find or don't have the color powder I'm wanting. I buy more when ever I see some on sale. The glitter NP I have even used on crankbaits with a good top coat over the NP, work great. :)

Cant answer for the colored stuff, but for a clear coat ,,,NO,,,,,,As shoe said the LA brand of clear is much better.1/3 the price, doesnt thicken up after a couple of sessions, and is as hard if not harder...I found mine at CVS for .99 ea..But will check the dollar stores..

I hate it, but only bc it works on my nasal passages and takes FOREVER to dry. Would be better if i tied ahead.

Would gladly relinquish the clear top coat to Shoe n Lou. Only bc they're experts and not bc they're women, of course.

Want to look into the uv stuff one day but looks expensive.
But will prob just stick with dipping in lacquer.

SH - what you using for a top coat over the no.

I use the 5 ton 2 part epoxy. It has around a 30 minute work time and a little goes a long way. Got it a Advance Auto but I'm sure you can find it cheaper.

Devcon 2T - great stuff. I don't like SH because it doesn't thin like other FPs. I still use it - but like the cheaper stuff better.
