Different forms of soft lead.

These bricks weigh ~12kg - the smaller one I am not sure:

The buckets have WW - mostly tape type. There is lead sheets on the left and right. The sheets on top of the buckets is 1/4" and come from a communication site. The large yellow object was part of lab equipment that came from a decommisoned radiology lab (~75lbs):

More soft lead in the containers & buckets:

In door stash for pouring. This soft lead is the only type I will put into a pot before cleaning. You should clean & flux outdoors and pour ingots to use inoors.

I'm gonna have to hit the bricks for some lead . I can see in a year or less That its going to be short supply around here . Sonny my guestimate for you is maybe 3 yrs. Got to be a way to land a ton of lead somewhere. Looking pretty for now though.

That should be a lifetime supply for smaller jigs. I keep trying to find a construction company that does x-ray rooms...no luck yet.

x2 on lifetime supply. No more scrounging, just wait for referrals.

I don't see any 1# ingots? And that old sheet stuff lying around looks inconvenient.

thnx everybody

Got to get busy Keith - get the ingots poured. Sheets are ok - just dirty.

Got a nephew and some friends that drop off about 50lb to 150lb every other month. Nephew works for a hazardous waste company and he knows I'll take whatever he wants to get rid of.

That's enough to last a long, long time. Especially if you're pouring smaller jigs like 1/32. Seems like I never have more than 25 lbs at any one time. Right now I have a pot full plus a few 1lb. ingots. I never keep a bunch on hand, seems like when I have enough I pour heavier jigs and it's gone in a flash.

That is an impressive stash! How do you melt the bricks? I have a 50lb. ingot that I "borrowed" from work but no way to cut it up. Can they be cut? I will try to get a picture of our lead furnace to post. Capacity is well over 5 tons.

I've heard of guys cutting with chisels, even heard a guy say he used a circular saw "Dont even want to imagine the lead chips flying around"

For me - BEFORE I got my cast iron pot - was to get a couple of blocks of wood and put the lead block on it - under the front edge put an old cookie sheet there and use a torch and melt it off on the tray - When you get a melted piece that's workable for your pot stop melting the end and push it off to the side of the tray and start again. As the block gets smaller just keep moving it forward and keep melting.

ccj if you don't have a large pot you can split it with hammer and chisel. I have done something similar to what Fm did with a torch. If you do that be very careful - the large ingot gets really hot while you are melting part of it off.

You can cut that ingot with a chain saw . Spread a good size tarp out set up the ingot on a sturdy block of wood and go to hacking . you collect the chips from the tarp . Now I'm telling you wear long sleeves jeans and boots , eye glasses . Those chips coming out sting the fire out of you and those buggers are hot .
