I got this 25 pound chunk of lead from an X-Ray Laboratory.Scratches with a fingernail. That's all I know about it.I need to keep some really soft lead aside for the 1/64 and 1/80 oz. jigheads with my new mold.Any way to know for sure?

It's probably in the upper 90%. Labs uses the lead to block radiation so it has to be pretty clean lead.

I had several similar chunks that I sent Hawn. I think he told me that they were mid 90s....

A better pic would help - looking for a dull gray

The test I use for detirmining the type of lead (hard / soft) is the 'thunk' test.

Drop the lead on a concrete floor. If the sound the block makes clinks/rings/is high pitched/tinny - it's hard lead. If it goes "thunk" - it's soft.

Thumb nail test isn't always accurate - I have lead ingots made from known wheel weight lead (I melted/poured the lead), and I can scratch them w/ my thumb nail. These ingots don't thunk.

I haven't used one in years so I've forgot the name of the tool but it has a pin in it spring loaded and measurement scale tells the hardness when the pin hits the metal . Probably find one at the auto parts store. Just looking and knowing where it came from I'd say its 96 % pure.

Definate pure - I've seen the same type removed from a renovated x-ray lab before. It's really good stuff - actually in the blocks it's easier to handle the last time I got some was when I was stationed at Plattsburgh AFB, NY and they were cutting up the hugh sheets with a jack hammer!!!!!!!! With Lake Champlain right next to the base there were lots of fisherman!!! just grabbing as much as they could!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
