I just picked up a DO-IT mold
Round head jig 1/16 and 1/8
Model JR8-1063. Question is, dose anyone here use this mold and can I use sickle hooks with it instead of the O’Shaughnessy style hooks that it calls for.
I bought it really cheap.
Thanks Guys

I had to use a Dremmel tool and lengthen the indentions for the hook eyes on mine for it to accept sickle hooks. Other than that, it works fine. I think my mold is the JNR-1062.

The sickle hook may be a little heavier than the O'Shaughnnessy style . Therefore your mold might not completely close causing flash . This can be fixed by placing a sickle hook in a cavity closing the mold laying the aluminum part on a flat surface . Then smack it with a heavy chunk of lead to seat the hook . Continue to the next cavity until your done with all the cavities .

.......you might need to trim some flash!!!!

'Flash' is the lead that seeps out (where you don't want it to) around the hook shank or eye when you pour the lead. Have to either cut it off or grind it off.

O'Shaughnessy style hooks are heavy wire - sickles are not so there will be extra space in the hook slotwhich fills with lead, this is called flash and you'd have to trim it.

Unless you want to learn mold modification & cleaning up messy castings, IMO you'd be better off with a mold designed for light wire hooks. The mold Fatman mentioned JNR-1062 would be an excellent starter combo mold for no collar 1/16 & 1/8 ball heads with crappie size #4 & #2 hooks.

Squall I actually tried to find a pic of one with flash on it and couldn't!!!!!!!! Gotta give Scott the credit for mentioning the JNR -1062.

I have the
JNR-8-1632 (1/32 & 1/16 no collar)
RHB-8-1632 (1/32 & 1/16 barbed collar, 4 each)
RHB-8-48 (1/8 & 1/4 barbed collar, 4 each)
