Hey all, I need help with getting a new vise, I figured since the grandson wants to learn I may as well get a new one so we can sit side by side and he can copy me. I know I'm getting ahead of myself a bit but he loves fishing and is really getting into tackle making by helping me pour lead and make spinnerbaits and stuff so I feel pretty confident that when he ties his first jig he'll be hooked so I may as well begin the search. The biggest issue for me besides price is the size of hooks the vise can hold. I have tied bucktail jigs for a long time that have had hooks range from 1/0 to 4/0 so I need that capability but I am really liking making smaller jigs with hook sizes from 4 to 1, I don't see myself going any smaller than a size 4. The vise I use now is a cheap terra vise I got earlier this year to replace the terra vise I had from 2004, that cheap little vise did a good job over the years and I'm sure this will be good but if I can get a better one that I can afford I'll be able to give my current model to the little guy so he would have his own and that he would love. So, if you have any suggestions of what to get I'd appreciate it, because I know I can get another like this but since I began tying these smaller jigs, I really feel like getting a better vise as I see myself tying a lot more jigs than what I had done in the past. Thanks.

Been using a Griffin Spider now for awhile and really like it..... lots of room around everything to work and fully rotates. Cost about $75 when i got it but think it is up around $85 now. I know i have held up to 2/0 hooks and gone down as small as #12 with it. Never held any bigger than 2/0 just because i don't use them any bigger but bet it would hold.

Interested to hear what you end up getting.

The key to any vise selection should be the answer to the question, "What am I going to tie with it?". You've mentioned that a vise should be able to hold hooks from size 4 to 4/0, so that's a requirement. Might there be anything else?

I use a vise to hold more than hooks. Often, I use one to hold body materials. I own three vises. Included are:
  • A Griffin Superior 3ARP
  • A Dyna-King Barracuda
  • An old Regal prototype, hybrid (mutt), or clone
Of the three, I use the Griffin the most. Its jaws are the most versatile. They hold hooks and body materials pretty well and without damage. Long materials are easier to work with when the vise jaws are positioned horizontally.

The Dyna-King holds the widest range of hook sizes superbly, especially big hooks. It's a very well-built vise. However, it's pretty useless for holding body materials without damaging them and long materials are a no-no. It's a very expensive vise too.

I wish I tied on the "Regal" more. Its a pretty cool style of vise. Holds hooks well without any adjustment. However, it's really worthless for holding anything other than hooks as you cannot adjust its vise jaws beyond what a squeeze of its lever provides.

Don't know how much my little review will help you, but maybe I've provided you with some ideas for further consideration before you buy.

Wow this question comes up all the time on the fly boards!!! Everyone can give you pro's and con's of the vise's they like and tie on BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're the one that has to tie on it, if you have a shop nearby go in and see if they'll let you tie on them or find a fly tying group in your area and try to tie on a few.
