I've got some jigs I purchased before I started tying that I don't care for the hook quality. I was thinking about using them for steelhead jigs and tying them articulated. Basically cutting the jig hook off at the bend and leaving just a trailing hook.

What's the best type of line to attach the trailer, and how should I attach it to the shank on the sactificial jig so it won't slip?

Limited tying expertise on articulated but here is what I do. Use 10 or 15 # test power pro as line . Tie the trailer hook on first as a snelled hook. Then tie the power on to the lead hook ( the jig head ) by wrapping with mono thread. Then wrap body material onto power pro and the shank of the jig hook.

I tie mostly for panfish ( articulated san juan worms) and a few other odd creatures. Though they are tied with panfish in mind I have caught some rather large bass and catfish on them and they have held up to the abuse the bigger fish put on them.

Zac interesting pattern!!!!!!! That's got to be a pain getting that but off one on the scud hook though. some guys are NOT gonna want to flatten barbs to get it on there. Might be easier to use a big eye hook?? Have to try some of these!!!!! Thanks for the link!!!!!!

I like scud hooks for almost all my nymphs. Curved shape and a smaller "look" eith a bigger "bite" sometimes. I really don't see that pattern as all that complicated. Especially if you replace the biots with rubber legs! ;)

That's an interesting tie on the scud hook, but since jig hooks run point up, I don't think that would work.

I don't know if the Intruder tie would work on a jig, since you can't run the line used for the hangback loop through the eye of the hook. I need some way to secure the hangback loop so it won't slip. I got some heavy dacron fly line backing in that box of materials I was given, so I was thinking of using that. I've also got some 17 pound Fireline that might work.

Maybe lash it down one end with a rough thread like Kevlar (so it has a good grip,) make a dubbing type loop with the backing/Fireline, then lash down the other end, overwrap the loop so it sticks out the back and hit the entire thing with superglue?

Shoe instead of putting your jig in the vise hook down put it hook up and tie the pattern the same way. YES!!! it is a pain tying it with the hook up you just have to be careful or use a pencil eraser on the hook to protect your fingers LOL!!!

im new to this forum but i joined for the discussion on the articulated jigs. I have been tying them based on some streamer patterns i have seen Kelly Galloup tie. The connection point is made by using beadalon wire (purchased at michaels. Also i do not clip the front hook like i have seen on some video. Just curious what is the purpose of cutting the front hook off?

I do know big trout seem to love the larger articulated jigs. I tie them with an 1/8 oz ball head jig. The back hook is a No. 6 3x streamer hook.

Another material that might be more streamlined is the leader material Doug Stange used one time - twist weld leader wire. You put it through the eye of a hook twist it around itself and heat with a lighter and you have a really secure connection - he caught Norther Pike up to 35 lbs using it!!.

First off - welcome to the site! I do know some areas around me have certain regulations during spring runs for how many hooks you are aloud to use as well as no treble hooks... maybe that is the reason? Not sure. If you keep both hooks intact, do you notice you get hook ups on the front hook as well?

Would love to see your ties nvchukar.
