I almost feel silly for asking this. I have a basic knowledge of the use of the different kinds of hackle but I am a little confused with....well....The different kinds of hackle and their uses. :) For instance I see a lot of you all on here tying jigs with hackle tails. Is that the same type of hackle that is palmered on a woolybugger? Can someone give me a little run down on hackle? Thanks

I use the hackle that is strung that you buy in packages for my tails when I tie them. The Hackle that I use for palmered on woolies is the saddle hackle. I have found that if you buy a full streamer neck there are a lot more hackle that can be used for tying. The down side to this is that they don't always come in all the colors that you may want. Some where on the web is a good tutorial of how to tie a hackle tail crappie jig. Google it and you can see how some of the tiers do them. I know that mine are not tied exactly like most do it but they work for me.

Hope that this will help you out. The Fatman has more information on hackle and am sure that he will chime in.

Neck hackle is generally what's used for tails on crappie jigs. Saltwater hackle has longer barbules??? (Or fibers in case that other word was wrong lol) so some prefer using that.

That is an excellent link Len. Lots of good information through the whole site, the 'Material' page has info about several materials. Bookmarked it - thanks!
