When you are using hackle for tails, how many tips do you use? I just started using hackle this winter and have mainly tied 1/32 oz stuff so far and just use one. However, anything bigger seems to look better with two. Any words of wisdom?

I'm just learning too, I've tied a few in the past but always seemed.....too thin. Guess b/c i've always tied with marabou.
I've found through G's and everybody's advice to utilize the whole feather and then some. Especially with multiple colors. But learning as I go also.
Might just be preference, but I want a balance b/t thin and bulky.
Tied or tyed some like so, just lately for someone and they seem to like 'em. They were actually 3 tips and 4 v's on a 1/32 #6. I like em bc I know others like 'em and if they like 'em and keep asking for 'em, they catch.
Will be making a order for more colors soon.
Let us know your preference when you figure it out.

I like the thinner profile hackle has over bou.... and LOTS easier and cleaner to tie with. I will probably stick with two tips on 1/16 and 1/8 stuff and see how they fish. Thanks for the input!

OK, newbie question......2 V's? You use the "tip", then count 2 side "v" sections? I watched a few Youtube vids and some use the whole thing, wrap it around all the way up for the body.

The tip of the feather will be different on each size jig. 1/32= 1'', 1/16= 1 1/2'', 1/8= 2'' or close. The V's will be cut out of the remaining part of the feather in about 1/4 to 1/2'' long V's. Tie in the V's after the tip has been tied in. Makes the jig thicker at the hook.
