About a week ago I was fishing for crappie at the local reservoir where I had so much luck. I met a guy who was fly fishing, but he didn't have the right type of flies. I'm not sure what he was using, but everyone around was catching fish except him. The water was really murky, and I was sure it was because the fish couldn't see his offering. So I gave him a few 1/64 and 1/80 jigs and teaser flies I had tied up and he started catching fish. He was really impressed with my selection of small jigs.

I had to walk back to my car for some reason and as I passed he said, "You know, I have a bunch of fly tying material, but I just never got into it. Would you like to have it?" I wasn't expecting anything in return, but of course I said yes! :D

I tied up about two dozen small jigs for him, and today we met up to do the exchange. Here's what I came home with.

All just for being nice on the water. He asked if he could hit me up for a few jigs in the future and I told him it wouldn't be a problem.

Nice stash you acquired there but the best part is the story behind it. More people should be nice to others like that. Even better you probably made a new friend and fishing partner.

Yesterday I went through everything. I just couldn't stop smiling about it the whole day. Some of the stuff must be pretty old, because it has the names of shops I know weren't in business when I moved here four years ago.

With all that dubbing, I guess I'm going to have to learn how to use it. There was a full tube of dubbing wax that hadn't even been used.

Any suggestions on what I can do with all that deer and elk body hair? I know it's used for spinning flies and poppers, but can you use it for jigs at all?

I'm not sure what kind of wings those are in the fourth pic. Anyone care to take a stab at it?

What a haul ! Yes you can use the elk for jigs . Especially if you are doing natural colors . Just as a thought remember you can tie any fly style behind a jig head.

You can use any hair you want for jigs - I'd use an old comb to clear off the cut ends - there is some course underfur you'll want to clean out before tying it on. The other thing is if it's really good spinning hair, tie it back a bit from the back of the jig head in case it flairs on you it'll be easier to trim before you make your thread collar.
