Figure out what size you are going to tye and get a "100 pack". When you start fly tying (or jig tying) it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the materials that are available. Some people will pay $200 - $300 for a "top of the line" skin - brag about it and tye maybe 2 or 3 flies off of it. Do you think you are going to tye more than 100 mosquito flies? Saddles are a better deal and easier to tye with. Too bad your so far north got a bunch of necks I need to get rid of - hate the shipping!!

If you have the money, the best deal is to actually buy the better (or best) grade you can get. The feathers are longer, so you get more flies per feather, and there are more feathers on the skin. When you price it out per fly, it's actually cheaper to use the good stuff.

Personally, I'm on such a tight budget that SWMBO would have kittens if I spent that much money on some feathers....

Now, if I had a stash of several capes/saddles back when the hair craze was at it's prime, I could have financed a trip to Patagonia, or made a good down-payment on a home.....

They have always been pricey, but this fad drove the price through the roof a few years back........

It has come down some since then, but still overpriced IMO. Then again, them little tiny flies need little tiny fiber feathers. They have you by the feathers... so to say. ;) I kept thinking that the chicken farms would work to ramp up production on the specific birds it takes to get these type of feathers. From what i understand, it takes several years before the birds grow the feathers long enough to be harvested. May get to a point where the market is flooded with these feathers and the price drops considerably?

Here is a discussion about them from 2011 where JungleJim was dying his own........ Dyeing Saddles

I'm gonna tie flies with the grizzly hackle, I'd more than likely tie other flies that require grizzly hackle, and then make them all the same size hook. It would take me ages I think to have to tie 100 flies.

I'm almost tempted to become a chicken farmer!

Me and Jungle Jim did pretty good during the fad. I got rid of a bunch - cleared out the old stock. Even got a Sidewinder out of it...... The saddles have come way down to pre-fad costs - maybe a little higher. You see the extensions on fleabay for cheap. I would be leery of those because you don't know what chemicals they might have gone through.
Genetic eggs come up on fleabay, every once in awhile....
