I've been going to various thrift stores here. Most of the desks are "office" or "computer" desks with a shelf that slides out for the pc keyboard. This really doesn't work with my clamp-on fly tying vise. I found this desk, and it originally had a "lip" on the front of the desktop. I thought that "lip" was small enough that my vise could still clamp. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I realized that this desk is hand-made, and the "lip" was only held on by some small nails and a couple wood screws. I managed to get one wood screw out, but the other one started to strip out. Just yesterday I was able get that final wood screw out, and the lip came off easily with a couple blows from a rubber mallet and a gentle prying from a small crowbar.
I have a penchant for tying really small flies, and I've read that having something with a matte white surface below your vise will reflect diffuse light upwards. Also, having multiple light sources illuminates your fly for different angles, making it easier to see fine details. I also use light-blue poster board as a profile plate; that color helps your eyes with color contrast.
I'm off work this entire month, so I need to flip into production mode and start working on flies and jigs for the upcoming season. AND, it looks like I'm going to be getting a big jig order from a buddy; he wants a couple hundred jigs
