Got permission on a new spot... a guy dad works with has two 3-4 acre ponds right behind his house. Huge deer hunter, and just fishes for something to do. Beautiful place. They do nothing but fish minnows, from the sound of it. Pond has gills, hybrid gills, crappie, catfish, and bass. We were given orders to come out whenever, and keep whatever we wanted. I took my 8-weight fly rod and threw some big stuff to try and catch some bass.... ended up with a bunch of gills and hybrids, a couple small fat bass, and two of these guys.

All fish were fat and healthy. Soon as it cools down, the gills and crappie are going to start coming home with me. Duck jigs are going to be bad bad news!

You lucky devil . Those are some of the cleanest fish I've seen . Skin is almost transparent and nothing that even resembles a parasite . I'd be wiling to scrub his bathroom toilet to fish there .

That was my first thought when he mentioned it was full of 10-14" crappie... could be messy when it gets cold.

Just remember, edges go quick on those little ponds even with short warm spells......... and watch out for drifts - do not tread. Learned my lesson. Any idea how deep - or where the deepest hole is?

Russ, I watched a couple buddies go in waist deep two winters ago. We are super careful, especially new places. The grandson of the owner kind of gave me a basic rundown of the contours of the main pond.... said it got to 15 feet or so deep by the dam. Once it freezes, me and my flasher will find out a little more. I am not too worried about finding a ton of fish right now in the heat of the summer. Let the water cool some, then it will be game on!
