Watching the SW tiers on the site and trying their hardbody jigs, i have learned they are very effective and durable. I have adapted some of them for smallmouth and have done well with them but they are killers on bluegill!

Learned a new little trick... maybe it is already used by tiers, but this was new to me. End result gives the look of a scale pattern. Glitter polish can be used to get a similar look, but the crystal flash or flashabou gives a distinct pattern rather than a random effect - and is very simple.

Used some bigger heads/hooks to show some off the SMB patterns. This one is a brown/green pattern - #4 hook - 1/16th (or so) shot head.

Tie the tail and body as you would a normal hard-body jig. Once you have the body shape you want, tie in either 2 pieces or a single strand of crystal flash/flashabou near the tail.

Spin them together... pretty much making something similar to a 2-strand floss.

Then wrap it up evenly spaced to the head. Unravel the leftover flash from your thread and trim the flash.

Whip finish and then top coat the body...

One other SMB favorite color pattern - black/red

Some of my micro (1/80 & 1/100) ties as well....

Pictures did not turn out as well as i had hoped... as always, capturing the crystal flash/flashabou can be tough and wasn't using the best lighting.

I'd say the pics turned out great! Very cool little finishing touch. Are you using one strand of k-flash? This makes me want to go tie some more jigs for ice fishing...

A single strand of k-flash does work but think running 2 strands looks better. Any more than 3 strands and it builds the thread pretty thick... looks alot more like ribbing with colored wire than a smooth body.

I have some white bodies that i wrapped with pearl midge flash/thread twist that looks really good, but couldn't get that to show at ALL in todays pics. Need a day with some sunshine and i will try to get some pics of those.

Reading comprehension would help me greatly! LOL
I have been looking for a way to make a wire-ribbed look and make it easier and a bit more durable on a smooth body. Thanks so much for posting this!

Now that's what I was talking about . Clear coat the whole thing except for the tail . You now have the most durable fish catching jig around . I have some that have been in the water countless times ,put up wet and after about 15 yrs. the tail is just now brittle and breaking . That probably wouldn't have happened if I had rubbed them down with wd-40 . Varigated rod winding threads and the like give you a world of different body colors.

Very nice Russ...definitely would be a great ice jig here for perch and crappie! I need to try a few of those...

Talk about false advertising. Couldn't wait to see these pix then all I see is some dadgum fishing lures. Nice fishing lures I must admit but dadgum man.

Russ, thanks again for posting this. I just tried the technique out on 1/64oz jig and love the look. Black head, natural squirrel tail, and copper krystal flash with two strands of black thread for a body. Should be a gill killer!

QK - Glad you got it to work. It is VERY simple to do and gives the body subtle flash similar to floss but easier to tie with IMO.

NS - The black/red is a favorite of mine for smallmouth in the river. ;)

FM - Been just using clear nail polish - if Sally Hansen only knew their reputation among fisherman.... they would start stocking it in fly tying shops! :D I would guess some thick styles of head cement would work also but NP is probably alot cheaper.
