Hi there,

after receiving a request for european sea bass bucktails, I took the customers`s color and weight wishes as a basis for a range of bucktail jigs. I´m nowhere near "real" salt water fishing in the northern sea, but he liked them. Hope they`ll work!

I´ve seen and listen very closely tho those John Skinner bucktail videos on youtube. Unfortunatly we have no pork rind trailers over here so I thought a rabbit strip would do the same - or better.

I´d be very thankful for every critique, feedback or improvement suggestion I can get! This "real" saltwater fishing is something I am not aquainted with, yet I have to deliver expertise to customers, which is a bit compromising

Yup, pro looking with no tag ends sticking out from or thru the thread wrap. Your paint jobs should catch some fish-er-men - as you know the fish aren't as particular.

Don't think I've seen pink/black combo out here.

thanks, as we all know, fish don´t hold paypal accounts :D When it came to bucktails, I´ve never tied anything than white for myself :)

It wasn´t the first time though that I heard something about "black and something red/contrasting", so I threw in uv-active pink fur and luminous pink powder paint. It is meant for night fishing. Black sure is a good night colour.

I´m mostly insecure about the amount of material. My personal believe is that less is more, and I also find that easier to work with, not to speak of the price of bucktail over here. Then again, I don´t want to look cheap and on top of things it is said that more material slows the fall, broadens the sillhouette and so...

Those look great! The ones with the long tail would have worked great around here for silvers(coho salmon)in the river. The blue and white one is the one I would have grabbed. I normally don't use that color blue much but found it to be the ticket for the coho this year.

What hooks are you using?? looks like they might be the 32833's....I love those hooks.

Great looking ties! I've often wondered why so many "bucktail jigs" seem like they have 4-5 times the amount for hair than I use.

I personally prefer a sparse buck tail tie. Many saltwater guys are conditioned to think that full jigs are better since most manufacturers have tied and sold that way for generations. Many feel that the larger volume sends a greater vibration or signal in the water and I can see using a fuller jig for bottom fishing and low visibility conditions but yours are perfect for sight, surf and pier fishing.
Very nice ties; love the zonkers!

Thanks for the feedback everybody! Its pretty much what I thought, but good to hear I´m not the only one.

The hooks are 32833`s. Whe have no pan fish over here and I have no idea where my customers are using my baits. You sell trout lures to bavaria and the next thing they come across a cat fish, a hucho or they take them on a vacation for some rock fishing in Spain or Norway etc. so I´ve decided to make them my of-the-shelf standard hook, from perch to seea bass, with very few exceptions.

Excellent ties! Very clean work and hard to find anything wrong. Choice of hooks are good also. When they are tied sparsely, the whole tail can breath in the water.... too full and they have no room to breath.

One thing i do on jigs that have longer zonker tails with bucktail is put the bucktail all the way around and leave the bucktail a little shorter. It helps to keep the zonker from getting flipped up and stuck around the hook during casts and you keep the excellent action of the zonker strip out the back. It is more of a performance thing and will not necessarily sell more to fisherman. ;) Here is a link from a while ago that shows what i am talking about and still do it this way.

Keeping zonkers from fouling

thanks for the consieraton! I found that if I jurst tie in the rabbit strip and then push it over the hook, it doesn`t foul that muchh. It finds its most outmost anglepoint by itself so to speak.

Yah, I agree with skinny ties, but commercially, a customer may not appreciate most of the hair getting chewed off by a fish or two. I tie my trout furs thick enuf to resemble a ball for some reserve, tho that doesn't help much either. So, I'm gonna try all synthetic this year.

Of course, will have naturals as back up. One situation last year, I pounded a tail run hole with a 1/16 white synthetic Boolie with zero bites, then switched to a 1/24 brown mink fluff Boolie and got 2 trout in quick succession. Of course, jig size and color might be considerations as well.

The 32833 is getting so popular the Shortys price for 3/0 is $58 more than the venerable 32786 3/0.
