Got a chance to get down into the paint cave and test a few new paints and newly acquired custom pours......

Played around some with the traditional look of nose painted shad darts. Decided i like them the best with just a short (lengthwise) dip in contrast color at the nose. These are also using what is my custom pearl color using mica powder and clear as well as a metallic bright yellow i came up with. The 'noses' that look orange are actually the Flo. Red color from ProTech.

These are candy coated over tin darts to let the shiny metal show through. The two reds on the right use the Candy Red from ProTech and the other red is one of my own mixes of Flame Red/Clear/Glitter. One to the far left has a kiwi hi-lite color on top over Candy Gold. All were dipped into Mica Powder to add just a little sparkle to the already shiny tin.

Next are some customs i had poured. They are 1/4th's with a ring barb, made of tin on 1/0 O'Shaun Gami hooks. These turned out beautiful!!! All of these have candy colors on top (with the light dip in Mica first) as well so they still allow the tin to reflect through. The candy gold (on the left) almost looks plated when applied very lightly. Also got some new candy chartreuse. The one on the far right turned out looking like a metallic chartreuse. All turned out good - SHARP hooks.

Last up is a few more spoons done mostly with candy coating.

The pictures for all of these just don't show how well they reflect the light and make the colors pop out when using the candy paint. Even the ones that have mica base colors almost look dullish in the photos but really jump out in the light.

Thanks for the kind words all. :) Seems i have been painting more than tying lately. Wanting to get some larger blank spoons and paint them up for my Dad to troll up some 'eyes up on Erie. Can go crazy with those color combos..... mad scientist let loose.

The mica powder was purchased off of Ebay a while back, i believe it was listed as 'super sparkle' mica but i could be wrong. I mix small amounts of the mica with clear powder and use it that way. Can dip or tap it on, just keep the temp somewhat low when you put it on - if too much sticks the mica can take over and turn everything silvery pearl quickly. Works awsome as a light base coat under candy colors.

:icon14: I stand in awe

Gotta get into that tin melting real soon. Can I ask how pure you use it? its quite pricy over here. Does it come out easiely from a wobble jig mold?

Working on a shallow running jig for low-light ul zander fishing these days, a light alloy combined with a slick thin uv-active candy coat would kill.

Those Paint jobs are off the charts man! I Love to tie a jig or Carve a wooden lure but doing the Paint work has always been my favorite part of the process. I really want a good airbrush system to do better custom paint jobs on Fly poppers and wood top waters and jerkbaits. I guess powder can be airbrushed too huh? I'm sure I'll get one, one of these days.
By the way The Kiwi over Candy Gold shad dart is bout my favorite. :D:icon14:

Bucho - My source for all things lead free is member Hawnjigs. Hopefully he will see the post and reply here. I do remember him mentioning that Tin will shrink as it cools. Thinking he said it can cause the hook to fit loose in some head styles once it cools.

AndyLane - I know that i have read were people are using certain spray guns for powder..... all my stuff is done with a combination of dipping and tapping. Took me a while to learn that the temp that you heat something has a major role in how well it takes color when dipping into a jar of powder. Got to keep the jig from getting too hot. You can get some precision by tapping from a brush but i also use different types of stencils that block off areas and only allow paint to fall where i want it.

I would not have asked if I kew you bought them there. Knowing that there´s no lead in play pretty much answeres my question, thanks!

The 1/4 ball heads came from www.leadfreejigheads.com. I had him pour them using O'Shaughnesy style Gamakatsu hooks - ends up with a little bit of an eye forward placement. These hooks are actually considered light wire i believe......... so maybe only catch a small shark with them. :P They are stout enough for my fishing, sharp lil' boogers too. The 1/4th ball head originally had an additional lead 'keeper' barb, but i had them removed since i did not plan to use a plastic trailer.

May get a chance to tie one or two tonight.

AF, the troos candy looks off the charts bright reflective, and the gold looks about the best I've seen for powder.

Snake, the Gamis are light wire poured into 1/4 oz. Do-it Shakey heads with the barbed part of the collar trimmed off leaving the ring portion. Soft lead or tin collars can be snipped and twisted off rather easily. The mold is picky about hook fits and often requires bending for optimal pours - for example a Gami 604 heavy wire 4/0 is listed as a stock fit but I like about a 5* outbend of the hook eye leg to avoid (minor) pour voids where the eye leg exits the head.

Bucho, pure or nearly so tin releases as well as lead in the Wobble Jig mold. I have the older orange handle version - newer black handle Do-its in general are stickier with ruffer cavity faces. Bismuth rich alloys get totally stuck in WJ cavities.
