If you stick them on with nail polish, the powder paint is also affected and is staying weak and gummy under the eye. I use super glue under the eye and let the glue dry for a day, then use the polish to overcoat and dry.

Hope this helps, Mac

I'm using super glue now as well, only I'm not letting it dry for a day. I've tied some jigs within an hour of gluing the eyes on. I'm putting a nail polish overcoat on some but not all.

I use Sally Henson's Hard as Nail's and have had no problem with eye's coming off. Also, I cure my painted heads and the SH doesn't affect the paint at all.

I've never seen any PP that was affected by nail polish in this way. I've heard of it changing color, but not going gummy. Vinyl, yes. PP, no.

Bucko, how hard are you pressing on the eye? If you are using hard molded eyes, the eye will deform slightly when you press down on it hard, but it will want to return to its original shape. Unless you use a really strong glue, eventually it will return to form and break the seal. This is especially true if the surface of the head is not flat (which is usually the case with jigs with eye sockets because the PP collects in the corners, leaving the socket cup-shaped and sometimes slightly too small for the eye.) Superglue works, but if you get any on the surface of the eye it makes the eye cloudy. Epoxy also works, but it's time consuming and you waste a lot if you just do small batches.

It seems counter-intuitive, but I've found the solution to using normal nail polish is not to press too hard on the eye when you put it on. That will keep the eye from deforming. Remove the eye from the backing using a bodkin and press it just hard enough to get it to stay while you apply the nail polish. Fill gaps around the edges by dabbing the polish under the edge.

ive been flatening the head with a pliers like I always have, like stumphunter showed. havent had this issue before with eyes. maybe bad batch? and I notice with this nail polish the brush is turning yellow. im using protec pearl white. as far as pressure, im not pressing any harder than normal. im selling these so I just want to be sure that im sending out a great jig. im pretty picky, probably too picky.

If you're using gold eye's, that's what's turning your brush yellow. I cure the PP then apply the eye's then the SH.

Maybe your old eyes were soft molded. Soft eyes don't return to shape, so they don't have the problem.

Your brush turning yellow seems to indicate a chemical reaction of NP with either the eye plastic or the adhesive backing? I've noticed that nail polish composition varies a lot - even Sally has at least 3 versions of their clear. Could be your Revlon version is chemically incompatible with the eyes?

I can say from experience that 3d eyes, older ones anyway, will eventually discolor and soften under an epoxy overcoat, in my climate.

I do the the same but I have had a problem with the eyes loosing the 3d appearance and turning out dull, almost smokey looking. and yes I am using Sally Henson's Hard as Nail's.
Any ideas?

I haven't noticed the eye's dulling any but then as dingy as the water always is where I fish, dingy eye's won't be a problem.

ya thats the other thing, lots of clear lakes here. I fish some that I can see bottom yet in 20+ feet of water. fish are ultra spooky there. every little detail is important for those fish. pretty cool fishing them though when u can see them coming up from that far down.

SallyHansOns is what I've been using but hate it. It smears fl yellow ppaint, cured or not. But the worst thing I've found is that if you leave a jig in… let's say inna ice chest, live well, boat floor etc that is holding water for a day or two, you'll have a jig head that has a permanent white film over it.
Never lost an eye on a jig with it after many many fish though AND IT'S QUICK DRYING AND CONVENIENT so thats y I stick with it. Just gotta practice better cleaning habits. …
And not like fl yellow so much.

I hate the darn sticky eyes...... started painting them all now but used to use super glue.

I have seen nail polish turn some cured powder paint into near jelly that you could just slide right off with a finger. Maybe just certain powder with certain NP does this.

Guys it is the eyes themselves . Look on the back of the eye if it does not have a silver back you will probably have some trouble . The over seas mfg . vari in their processes . The glue on eyes is not the same from one to another . The bad thing is they trade back and forth with each other depending on demand . That means you will get different eyes from several mfg when you are ordering from the same place every time . You might try PVC pipe glue ,very tiny dot of it on the head then place the eye .

I'm going to say you are taking to long to paint on the SH. Nail polish dries very fast so you need to have the brush and keep the brush wet and only put on 1 coat but make the coat thick enough to cover the eyes. I don't place the eyes on the heads until I tie the jig, the eyes and SH is the last thing I do and then I hang the jigs to dry. Never had a eye turn smokey, speed up young man :)
