100 Amp main service . 220 electric dryer on 30 amp double pull breaker . run the dryer sometimes and it will TRIP the MAIN instead of the Dryer breaker ??????? checked all the wiring in the panel all set screws are tight no signs of any burnt or melted wires . I'm thinking the breaker for the dryer may be bad ? threw it several times and it reset . I'm stumped any ideas would be helpful !!!!
Thanks Quint

If the main is tripping you may be overlaoding the entire system and the dryer adding 30 amps to the equation takes it over the top.

My first though was a bad single breaker but sure no elec. expert. Do you have any other breakers you know are good that you could temporarily switch out to eliminate that question? Is it a dedicated line or could you have other things pulling off the same line?

Try the reverse of KDogs idea.....

Make a map of everything that is on (from a breaker perspective, and what is actually pulling a load - ie a room's breaker could be on, but not taking any current).

Turn off everything except the dryer. W/ the dryer running, start adding back circuts, a breaker at a time - if the main pops, you've got to much load for your main - you need to upgrade.
