The high last Saturday was supposed to be around 108, so I got up early and made the hour drive to the lower salt river. There's a little cove about 1/2 mile downstream from the Saguaro Lake dam that was full of bluegill last year, so I was hoping some were still there. Got on the water around 5:15 AM, and managed to catch 23 bluegill and 1 small bass. By 7:00AM it was already 95 and the fishing turned off, so I went home, before all the tubers/swimmers showed up on the river thankfully, it's a zoo there the rest of the day all summer long.
Kind of an experimental day...I had picked up a spool of Power Pro (5 lb) on sale at Cabela's a few weeks ago, and tried it for the first time. I rigged up two 5' ugly stik's, one with the power pro and one with 4 lb trilene xl. With a 1/64 oz jig and tiny unweighted float, the power pro rod cast 10' + further than the trilene rod. Also I loved the lack of line memory. I tied on about 2' of 6x fluorocarbon tippet to the power pro because I was worried about the fish seeing the line. I liked the power pro so much when I got home I took the trilene off the other reel and filled it with the rest of the power pro I hadn't used. Definitely more expensive than trilene, but if it lasts long then it works out in the end. Plus since my reels are ultralight (shimano 500 and abu garcia 100 size) I was able to fill both from one spool of power pro.
Most of the gills were only around 5-6", but still a fun couple hours.
