Been doing some research the past year or so on a small local lake... not fishing all the time, as much as scouting things out, waiting for water levels and temps to be right. This lake has a lot of small, private docks that are allowed to be fished by the public unless in direct use of the dock owner. I've found a few with brush under them, and have been waiting for water to get right so I can see which the crappie and bluegills prefer.
10/26, I took dad and we started at one of the deeper ones, figuring there might be crappie stacked under it. The deep side of the dock sits over 17-18 feet of water. Problem is, I found the fish under the walkway.... in 4-5 feet of water. Put 2 crappie and a fat bluegill in the bucket there. Hmm... well, if they're that shallow, let's hit a few more where it doesn't drop off as fast. We would catch one or two in a spot, and then move on. Very fun time with dad, exploring and catching fish that haven't seen a jig for probably 2 months. Most fish came up aggressively and really thumped our jigs!
This tactic has strong potential to really pay off as fall and winter progress. We will see!
