For those that use this, is it the luxury fur or the stiff ? Where do you get it at? We just had a Michaels open near me and they have a ton of stuff but very little in the way of stuff like this. I'm looking for a less expensive alternative to the Hareline extra select craft fur.

Just checked and a few of my 9x12 patches still have the store hanger attached...... but they really have no explanation of what 'type' they are. Says 'for ages 6 & up' on the back, so i qualify. :D I just look at the length of the fur fibers. If the longest fibers are 3" or so - get it. Some of them have alot of underfur but just got to deal with it. A 9x12 patch cost about $3 at my local shops so it is worth dealing with the under fur. I have several basic colors that are Darice label.... black, white, gray, orange, yellow, kelly green, tan and brown. Have bought it at Michael's, PatCatan's, Wal-Mart and a mom-n-pop local shop..... Cabin Creations.

Be sure to check in at any small biz craft shops that may be around - my favorite little shop is only a 3 block walk from work! They have a mish-mash of everything imaginable and lots of it works for fishing 'craft' projects. :) They carry doll hair also - much longer but have never purchased any. Another brand of fur i have is called Faux Fur that is made by the Fibre Craft company. This fur is much shorter in length but has several different natural colors of fibers in each patch. I cut it off the fabric backing and chop/mix it to create dubbing. A 12x15 patch costs under $4.

I've never paid attention to any distinction of luxury vs. stiff that is indicated on the Darice web site. Though the cards have changed through the years, I continue to look directly at the fibers just as AtticaFish does.

Sometimes, there is variation in color or stiffness between lots of furs depending on your supplier(s). I have several patches of brown that I consider prime. This particular "lot" has a thinner fiber that contrasts in color from dark at its base to very light at its tip.

Most of my patches are 12x9", though I do have a couple of 12x15" patches with silver (discontinued) and white fur, respectively. Their orange is very nice for tying smallmouth bass jigs. I've purchased orange, kelly green, pink*, red, fawn, and gray online. Try a Google search to get the "best buy" combination of price, shipping, and handling.

Some of my Darice Craft Fur came from Jo Ann Fabrics. Colors included black, white, and brown.

* - white fibers with very short, pink underfur.

Thanks all, I'm kind of spoiled as I didn't know what I was looking for when I got the Hareline Extra Select Craft Fur but it turned out fantastic, it make great smallmouth jigs but it is kind of expensive for a 5"x5" patch and what gets me mad is to get the colors I want I have to use 2 different suppliers because none of them carry all the colors. I was going to get the punisher hair but no savings so the Darice would be a logical choice but not having any close stores that have it I'll need to order it and I have no clue as they seem to sell a couple different kinds. I appreciate the help and I'll wait until Michaels is open another month and then check again for it.

I just took a look at consumercrafts.com. Great prices. Don't know about their shipping and handling, but the sale price for 12x9 patches is very good.

If I were ordering from them, I'd order the long pile (12x9) patches and stay away from the 12x15 deluxe craft fur. I have cards of some of the deluxe craft fur trim which is short pile. It's fine for my flies and micro jigs. Otherwise, it's pretty useless for the majority of the larger jigs that I tie.

Thanks Pup, that is a good price and it gives me an alternative to try, like I said, I was very happy with the way the extra select craft fur from Hareline peromed but you use a good amout to make a decent size jig and if I could find something like it for a little less I'd be happy and if this is pretty good at the price it is at, I'll be happy as a clam!!! Thanks!
