My Doc had me get one recently and never told me this. From Consumer Reports:

"Radiation from CT scans - which are equivalent to between 100 and 500 chest X-rays - might contribute to an estimated 29,000 future cancers a year"

"ask whether an imaging test that does not emit radiation, such as an MRI or ultra-sound, could be used instead"

Yes the KEY word there is estimated. It is not noted that 20,000 people a year are helped by finding a early cancer growth that can be cured or a tumor that can be removed before it metatheses. They can live to enjoy there families. Hug the grandkids and maybe fish. Guess if given the choice I would have one rather that not. As far as that goes how many of you spend a hour or more on your cell phone. Think that it doesn't put out a little radiation???
Think again!!!!!!! Think of them poor TSA people who have to stand by the X-ray machines 8 hours a day. Now I feel sorry for them.
