I got my cross cut rabbit today. The hair is'nt half as long as I thought it would be.Maybe an inch at the most.Do you guys palmer it around the hook shank then finish it up around the collar with the skin on?If so,I can probably get a half ounce Ultra Minnow to look good. Can't see using it all up on bigger sizes.

Here are my first attemps.Smaller one is a 1/4 oz.Looks ok I guess.Second is a 5/8 with a Gammie 4/0 604 hook.I tied a shad grey zonker for the tail then palmered some cross cuts on the body.I'm not too crazy about the whole rabbit thing.

I start around the hook point and wrap it all the way to the tie off point. Overlap your previous wrap slightly as you go to get a nice full body.

It's just like marabou. Looks like a drowned rat when wet out of water but puffs out and comes alive underwater. Fill a glass jar and look at the jig from the side underwater and you'll see.

Here are a few videos to give you an idea what rabbit looks like underwater:

Here's a couple of tips about tying rabbit...

Trim the hair on the section you're binding down to the hook. That gives the thread a better grip on the hide. When tying in a zonker strip, trim the end of the hide to a point. Makes it easier to bind to the hook. When tying a crosscut, cut a square shaped notch out of the hide. Like this:

____
. . . |___
_______|

Makes it easier to bind to the hook, and gives the hide a spot to bend so it won't hump up as much when you start palmering. In this diagram, the direction of the hair would be pointing down.

If you use a really long zonker strip for the tail, tie a loop of heavy monofilament under the bend of the hook. It will keep the strip from flipping back over the hook point.

Thanks Shoemoo. You were a lot of help to me.I just tied a couple of teasers on 5/0 hooks for fluke. They are very sweet looking.I'm going to go fishing in the sink to see how they act in water.I'll post a pic later.Combined cross cut with a zonker strip for the tail.Very sweet. Thanks for all of the videos.

Salty - Your jig looks good to me, the rabbit does look excellent in the water.

Shoe - Never heard of using that technique to start a cross-cut palmer.... will give it a try. Have always had a hard time getting the first (and last) wrap to look right so i tend not to use as many palmered.

I will say i use alot of zonkers that extend out past the jig pretty far and tie a regular bucktail thread neck body over top the zonker.... just leaving the bucktail to stop near the hook bend. The zonk flips around alot out the back and the bucktail keeps it from fouling over the hook.

Bruce to be honest I reckon rabbit (whether palmered or cut and tied when dresising the collar) is just too short for larger jigs. Mucks up the proportions and can see why you aren't convinced.
I think the tail of the bottom jig would have been just right size if it was on the smaller jig above it. But that's about the size limit for minnow styles IMO.
Can always combine bucktail with a wider cut rabbit zonker (Texas cut??) in zonker deceiver style if you want that zonker magic on a bigger jig.
I've got some Arctic fox zonkers which is two and a half to three inches long and handles larger jigs better. But not much larger.
I reckon save your wascally wabbit for smaller offerings.
Shoe great info, thanks!

The stuff is great on teasers.I actually enjoyed making these two. They are tied on 5/0 hooks.Great movement in the sink, lol.I can imagine what they would do on the end of some fishing line.

Okay ??? Now that I've started tying a few of these is there a difference in the length of the hair between a regular cross cut strip compared to a Magnum Cross Cut Strip????

No, just the width of the strip. The hair is the same length. All the rabbit I have seen is about as inch, except bunnybou which is a little shorter.

Also, I think magnum strips only come as zonkers, not crosscuts.

Yes, thanks very much Shoe. Answered a few questions with the SR video.
You seem to be well versed in anything bunny related. Request for a quick video or pic tutorial!?!
