Had a Little drive for work today, and was reminded of one of the Southwest's best road fare's...The staple out here at just about any roadside fuel and country store...The infamous fried burrito,,(or fart log as my family so aptly refers to it)..I know Mel and probably Toad know well of what I speak...

Makes an hour or so drive (with a Dr Pepper) much more tolerable..Especially if alone....

I know in my travels through the south,,,boiled peanuts seem to be a similar attraction...What about you midwest folk, and even the
Yankee's aboard, whats your local fare available at just about any stopping point ????

Oddly enough, taquitos (the rolled up soft shell tacos thingys rolled right beside the hot dogs) are a mainstay at a lot of gas stations around here. More taco than filling.... but think they inject enough salt inside to make you think you are eating something.

The good stuff: There are actually three separately owned service stations in Tiffin (the town i work - has two colleges) that have a fully stocked deli fridge with a lot of different meats and cheeses that are sliced on order - some even locally processed at two different distributers in the area. They make up subs and sandwiches that you can buy for fairly cheap. During the summer when i head out to the river to fish....... grab a cold cut turkey club (((or roast beef and swiss) or cold pizza sub) or colby/turkey rye) and small bag of chips for under $4 - woooof it down as i drive out to the river. :D

When the Hatch green chili ripens and is available it is the bean burrito with roasted green or red chili. Great for cheap fishing trips.........

Depends on where ....

In certain parts of VA, we have a little mexican dive called Anita's that sell a Carne Adovada breakfast burrito that's worth stopping for 24/7. Marinated pork in red chili sauce w/ cheese, eggs, & home fries.

On the eastern shore, or comming back from one float in West-by-God, there's dives that sell soft shell crab sandwiches. Basically a fried soft shell crab, plenty of Old Bay, lettuse, tomatoe between two pieces of white bread or toast.

Do a float up in Maine, where a convience store has a flat top & do the best burgers ever. Of Course, we just got off a 6-8 day canoe camping trip and anything would taste good after Mountain house for days on end.

On many floats in WV, VA, MD, & PA, they have road side BBQ. Basically a smoker on a trailer, pulled behind a pick up & your in buiz. BBQ served either NC or Memphis style, cole slaw, hotsauce between a hamburger bun. Some are better than others, but they are all good after a long day on the river.

Most where I go are the Cumberland farms, Exxon Mobile, and some don't have anything while others have pizza, burgers but the stuff has been wrapped in aluminum foil or on the pizza tray for who knows how long, or it's pre-made and you throw it in a micro-wave.

Don't like Sub-Way but that's al whole lot better than the other crap.

Forgot about the variety of po' boy shops we have in VA. I'm especially fond of the italian themed ones.

I target one in DC that gets soft gooey fresh daily baked bread & uses the best italian cold cuts. They make a sandwich called a G-Man that is one of the best.

They we have an italian deli/pizza place up the street from my house that Donald Trump frequents because he bought his kid the local golf course to run. Authentic italian & food that's top of the line for flavor. Counter serve keeps the prices down.

One thing about the DC area, is there's a plethora of culinary delights ranging from redneck to ethnic to gourmet for a reasonable price.

Russ' post reminds me that nothing beats an old gas station / small grocery store that has a deli. The best sammiches Ive ever had come from those places! MMM two 1/4" slices of hoop cheese! Dont know why but i can never make a sammich as good at home.
