While trying to sort out a 65 year old mess that passes for my fishing tackle collection. I stumbled across my old trout fishing vest. Inside the pockets I found a 1/2 pack of Kools , Cigarette lighter and a box of chiromonids. I quit smoking 5 years ago so its been MIA or at least 5 years.

As I looked at the chromies it dawned on me I had never tried them for ice fishing. I am going to remedy that IF we get ice this year. I caught a lot of different species of fish during my fly fishing craze period. My not so reliable memory recalls a stream with saucer sized gills one day that made me forget all about trout that day.

I researched online and man they have come a long way since I first tied these. Being inspired I posted on iceshanty.com about my idea to use them thru the ice. Quite a few ice anglers assured me my idea was neither new or half-baked.

So having sooooo much time on hands I whipped these few out today.
A number 6 jig hook in the middle gives a size reference. Googling chiromonids on the net will give tons of info on them if you are interested.

They look great! Did you just use thread for the ribbing?

Only concern i might have is the ones with the up turned eyes..... they may hang at a funny angle down below. I have used the scud hooks with down turned eyes under floats and such, but never the up eyes.

AF - Chromes are such lousy swimmers it don't matter how they hang. Used thin wire for ribbing. I guess the lousy swimmin part is why fish prefer them nothing like an easy meal. From what I read they use trapped gases in their body to elevate to the surface when they are ready to hatch. They also swim extremely erratic so maybe the funnier the angle the better. Either way I hope we get some ice this year to find out.

They look good, I especially like the ones tied on the wide gap hooks. I tie a lot of bluegill files on wide gap hooks.
