She's been bugging me about a trip since school got out and we got some unseasonably cooler weather here so we took advantage of it and got out during the week, hate the weekend crowds. Temps in the low 80's so we set out for a trout/smallie expedition. Lucianna with a smallie and JigCraft hat on backwards in first picture. She did better with the smallies the first two days, couldn't catch a trout until today using a 1/32 all black boolie jig while it was overcast until it started raining and we stopped fishing. She was really excited about the deer that came to our camp site. Final score today was Luci 4, grandpa 4. She was up a couple times and caught the last trout of the trip. Last picture is of where the spring branch starts with some really nice trout. No Fishing is allowed in this area. Lot's of people fish here, really crowded on week ends. Whenever I go there it's during the week so I can pick the campsite I want. The spring branch is .7 miles long where it runs into the Maramec river. On opening day of trout season here there averages about 1500 fisherman crowded into this stretch so it get's hit hard. Mostly rainbows with a few browns. I think they might introduce Brook Trout soon, seen some in a rearing pool at the hatchery. Some must have escaped because I saw one caught in the trophy trout area the first day. The conservation agent I talked to about the fish said they hadn't released any and probably wouldn't this year.

Sounds like a good time and is a very beautiful place. The start of the spring looks amazing, and looks like the fish must be pretty brave and used to people. Fun trip!

Must say those are the nicest fire rings i've seen at a campground.

The trout where the spring branch starts are protected and they have feed machines around the area so you can feed them pellets. It's cool tossing out a pellet and having a large trout race over and suck it in. I might go back in a week if the weather holds. I don't keep any trout to eat, I'll stick with crappie and gills to put on my plate. Luci learned a lesson which is always leave food inside your vehicle here. She left some chocolate chip cookies I bought her inside the tent and while we fished a squirrel chewed a hole through the tent and ate the cookies leaving behind a little gift on her blanket.

Awesome report Jim :icon14: Looks like a great time with the granddaughter. Camping and fishing, hard to get any better.
I love to see the wildlife while camping as long as they don't turn into a "Griswold Family Camping Trip" thing :beat-up: LOL,

haha! Never had critters make their way into our 'living space' but have learned our own lesson about leaving garbage near our site over night. If you leave it out within reach..... the possom/coon/skunks will make a very nice mess to clean by morning.
