Are the more expensive bobbins with the coated tips worth the extra money? Do they chip easy? I use the larger size spools that regular sewing thread comes on. I think they are 1oz. spools?
I had 80% of my tying equipment given to me, so bare with me on the names/descriptions of some items I may have lol.

Ceramic tip bobbins are a must, in my opinion!
I tie with a Rite bobbin most of the time... Once you tie with one for awhile, you'll understand why they're worth it. Smooth like butter!

Well this Grumpy old Indian is the odd man out. Have used them and cant see much difference in them and the non ceramic ones. If you use the large spool then use the larger bobbins. I use the 4.5 inch that are sold in the Bass Pro Shop. Most of the thread I use is on a large spool 1,000 yards. If you are using the standard 50 yard spools then it might make a difference with the smaller diameter of thread. Think that the years of experience might have a little to do with how they work also. I don't go at tying like I am killing snakes and don't have that much problem with broken thread or worn tips on the bobbin.

I don't like the ceramic ones either. The thread that I use most often is larger and my Cabelas bobbin is the one that I always grab for.The other one feels too light for me and my hands must be so used to the old one that the the new ceramic one just feels out of place.

I have a couple of ceramic bobbins that are good but the ones I bought from CA with the ceramic tips I use a lot. I like the size of these and for under $4 they do the job. I use the small 100 yard spools.

a good Bobbin well worth the money but unfortunately I do not buy the expensive ones I buy the cheap ones six at a time work 12 the reason why I do this is I keep a whole selection of thread colors ready to go.

I have used the $4 ceramic bobbins. The ceramic fell out of 3 of them. Then they really start shredding thread. I will be upgrading to something else.

Generally speaking . good quality standard bobbin will serve a long time before it starts to grab thread . However If I am using stranded floss I'll use the ceramic . The stranded floss seems to flow better in ceramic. I hate stranded floss . I have one style hard body jig I use it on because when clear coated it absorbs well giving it a gloss look .
