Working on what is the right pinch of wool. Thin vs bulk.....What is the right blend. Wool on the bottom side of jig only vs pinch on both top and bottom.....Lot of thoughts this morning. Suggestions from the senior tyers.

Some great looking bodies there! When Red ties these, tho, he takes about a 1 1/2" wool section, maybe 1/4"(or less) in diameter, then ties in its center and folds back on itself. Then he tugs quite hard to shape it(and tear out loose fibers), but not more than about 3 seconds effort, and get the wool fibers flowing together. He also doesn't extend it too far beyond the bend of the hook, as a MAJOR FUNCTION of the wool is to serve as the underbody which expands outward to hold the main attraction, the satin fibers, in position for best swimming. Red uses more satin fibers and flash materials than any I've seen recently posted, to the point that an untrained eye would not even be able to detect wool in the mix ! In water, the satin fibers hugs the wool form, and if extended properly ,overlap beyond the wool to form a very active, fish attracting" minnow tail" .

Fatman. you got that right - when tying with Red I'm often aghast over the clumps of satin & flashing that he heaps on ! As a "skinny" tier in the past, when I voice my wonderment to Red over his robust ties, he merely dunks his latest creation in his water bowl, jigs it up& down, and lets me see just how really active the satin fibers makes his "killers"!

JJ, thanks for the info on how red does it!! I was thinking maybe I was using too much flash and satin, but you answered that for me, thanks!

Jiggerjohn-- Thats what I thought also John. I keep going back
to the original post pix. Finally just ordered some off of Red to get direct comparison. Haven't got them in hand yet.
Talked to Red on phone again and asked him whats best test for wool. He told me if it doesn't hold the water well it the wrong type wool.

My latest wool ties are with shorter wool and longer pearlescent and satin fibers and more of them Ankle starting to heal up fairly well so maybe can make it to Niles show. As per my conversation with Red his attention to the smallest detail is fantastic. Which is why his jig enjoys the following it gets.

What I get from this thread is there is no reason to use any color wool except white as the satin is the color alternate. If I were to use two different color wool, one of which is lighter than the other, I'd put the light color on the bottom. Just my .02. Pop

From all I am getting it seems that Red is telling us that less is more which is the way I have been doing it. As with any jig the darker color should always go on the top with the light color on the belly. FWIW I have been experimenting with a FLASH DUCK electric chicken pattern and still there is no way to tell which is the darker color and which way they like better both seem to work equally well.
