When I was fishing salt water shoreline exclusively, my line choices were always max abrasion resistant due to the jagged lava rock & coral head bottoms here. So I dealt with stiff memory with its reduced casting distance and tendency to loose loop on retrieves. Some of those were Yozuri Hybrid(original), P-Line CXX, Stren(original), & Maxima Chameleon.

Since doing more fresh water fishing tho, I'm finding that limper monos cast farther and don't have the casting knot problems of stiffer versions. Used to like P-Line Floroclear, but the knot strength (see online reviews) was a problem. Now, my fave seems to be Trilene XL, and the $2 per 100 yds. machine wound at Sportsman's Warehouse seems surprisingly low for IMO a quality line.

I'd be interested in your favorite(s) and also your rants about fails.

The Trilene XL is pretty good and i use that on my ice fishing rods. Only downfall i can see is that it does have memory on the very small UL spools. Anymore, for my casting rods i grab the cheapest stuff i can find and just replace it if it starts showing too much memory or wear.

Never tried too many of the other 'top shelf' brands so can't really compare.

The Trylene XL was my favorite maybe 6 years ago. They started making it out of some cheaper stuff then and I never liked it anymore.

I use p-line floroclear on all reels, the only problem is that it looks dingy after a few days.

I guess I use about any freak'in thing I get my hands on except spider wire or something like it . If I use that stuff it's going to be on a cane pole. Pretty close to what they put on cane poles in the old days anyway. Still have some of that around here somewhere .

For years I have used Ande Premium in 1/8# spools (clear) for spinning up to 12# test ... use it on baitcasters up to 20# with the bulk of it 12# .... works great for in the surf altough I use it for most everything .. (Berkley Big Game is very much like it I think they copied the features of Ande) Yo-zuri Hybrid in 12 & 15 # test mostly in FW for plastic fishin. For 10# & lower I have found several $ a mile lines being great and chage it often.
Just 2 cents worth.

I only use mono for leaders. I use power pro for my main line. Got tired of line memory and tangles that mono is so prone to do.
Since I do a lot of night fishing it proved to me too much of a headache.

I do sacrifice some casting distance but not much. Some of the benefits far outweigh any of the negatives.

1. Tangles almost non-existent
2. Never lose my slip bobbers any more. Leader breaks and I get slip knot, bobber and crane swivel back. Attach another leader and boom back in water.
3. I mostly panfish but power pro has allowed me to land some big fish at times. Especially on the light equipment I use.
4. While more expensive at first I believe it saves money over the long haul. As I don't have to replace it all the time.
5. Increased sensitivity for jig fishing and vertical presentation.
6. Slip knot seems to hold better than on mono.

I really like Tectan, but it's getting harder to find and more costly. Next up would be Trilene Sensation. When I was out fishing with Ledhed in California I tried some mono that the name escapes me right now since I'm only on my first cup of coffee but it casts really well,is very strong with limited memory.I need to get some more. It was 2lb test but I really like it.

JJ - it is a co-polymer, Yo-Zuri Hybrid. I'm trying another co-polymer, izorline XXX. Has a thinner diameter than the Yo-Zuri.

My favorite mono would be Tectan also. Downside is Tectan is not going to make the 1 through 4 lb test line anymore.
