What kind of chairs do y'all use for fly tying. As of right now, i am using a simple officel chair. I definitely need a new one, as if i sit and tie for long periods of time, (anywhere from 15-20 minutes) my back starts hurting (middle-low back area). I find it intriguing that a 16 year old has back issues. of course i have to lean forward as my workstation is situated on a dresser, which means i have to sit away from my vise, as there is no room underneath for my legs. I'm not sure if its a new chair or a new desk that i need, but i definitely need one of the 2.

I would suggest table top height. I am seated and my table is 29". Another great new tool on the market is called backjoy. Works wonderful because it seats your hips and back into a position real popular for office environments. I stole this from my wife! I use a kitchen chair with the backjoy.

You want work done below pec muscles and center of your body when you are looking at the jig. Make the work come to you not vise versa.

I use a tall drafting chair. It has a foot rest and no arms but the back is adjustable for my lower back. My bench is just under 3' tall.

To solve your leaning forward you might want to attach your vise to a board (clamp board to dresser) that extends over your lap as you sit.

Guy at work uses one of those rubber excersize balls to sit all day. Say's it strengthen's his back & gives him a core workout at the same time.

I have a nice desk to tie at full-time now, but before that, I got a little lap desk and found it was awesome. I could sit in my recliner and tie. :) Walmart has them for 10-20 bucks. It is a soft cushion on the bottom and a hard plastic "tabletop" on top. Just enough for vise, tools, and materials you need to tie the jigs you're working on.

G'day, Have you been checked for scoliosis? Reason I ask is that I was diagnosed just a year younger then your age now. Decades of a crook back was not much fun. Recently started yoga, and gotta say, it can do wonders for a bad back. Forget the cosmic zen garbage that can come with it, it's just a good way to stretch and stengthen.
