I'm going to make a trip to South Padre Island with my bride this summer. And I was wonder about a good jig for flounder fishing. I mostly used live bait when I was younger, but I think for this trip it would be more convenient to go artificial. Any help would be appreciated.....

If you get most any jig close enough to a flounder he will eat it .. I use my Plastic Shrimp tail Jig.
Some like to tip a nylon (Pompano Jig) with strip of cut bait or shrimp .. To much trouble for me .. I guess I must be a "Purest"
when it comes to artificials.

Hope You have a good trip ... Look for Reds & Trout along with the flounder.

It were John Skinner´s flounder bucktailing clips on his awesome youtube channel that brought me to hairbait fishing in the first place. Terrific footage.

Thanks for the responses... I have been watchin some of John's videos, he has some very good info... Will prolly watch em all before we go. Just tryin to get some ideas on different color jig heads and hooks, maybe do some swappin. And I am deff. not prejudice against trout and reds. I wouldn't even mind if a Jack swam by and wanted to play.
This isn't a fishin trip, more of a vacation for the bride. I will prolly get drug up and down both sides of the Island to every shop in the area. I'm just gonna try and work in a little fishin here and there. But I did find a little bar when my eldest daughter married there a few summers ago that will cook your catch. Was thinkin some fresh flounder and a cold beer would be a good way to spend a hot afternoon.

Thanks again for the info, I appreciate it.

A guy here makes his own flounder rigs and tips them with Voodoo shrimp. The weighted rigs kick up a mud trail that drives the flounder wild. The shrimp sits just above the mud trail so that's what they see when they come to investigate. He pulls the rigs just like long lining for crappie. Ha he was catching so many he had several guides approach him asking how he was catching them!

Ron that bottom bouncing is the secret to catchin flounder .. There are so many rigs for flounder that it is mind boggling and as far as I know they all work ... course depends a lot on the fisherman .. he has to know where to chunk them.

If you're not above cheating a bit, Power Bait has enuf scent attraction to be classified as bait and banned in flies & lures only areas. The latest hot fad out my way is 3" Power Bait plastics for o'io (oh-ee-oh aka bonefish).

I THINK this NJ guy(Mike) mentioned using Power Bait or Gulp on collared jig heads.

I was also going to suggest powerbait but don't overlook saltwater assassins either, both great for multispecies saltwater fishing. Watching the tides on the tide charts just as important as the jigs/lures you are tossing at them too.
