Took dad out again today. Struck out along the face of the dam for whites and crappie. In the process, lost two nice Thill slip bobbers because I hung my jig up in the rocks. Told dad screw it, let's go to the smaller county lake. Ended up dipping a brush pile first and caught a few small gills and a warmouth, which aren't too common around here. Went and hit shallow laydowns in some coves and found crappie spawning.
Black/chartreuse and pink/black with dyed squirrel tail seemed to be the winner today!
Then we found some gills! All they were doing was biting the tails of our jigs and killing the bobber under. Set the hook and nothing. Told dad watch this..... grabbed my fly rod, a nymph, and an indicator. Put three fat bluegills in the cooler in the first three casts!
Ended the day with one keeper crappie and 23 gills in the cooler. Dad and I had an absolute blast. After a few gills, I put the fly rod in his hand for the first time ever and played guide. He hooked up twice but didn't land either. He did get to feel the difference in the fight, and I think he is hooked. Bought a new fly line to put on an old beginner rod/reel I have sitting around for him to use next time!
Some days, the fly rod is the best tool for catching big bluegills! We had some goobers in a pontoon hollering at us about "just catching perch" today, and a couple guys who should have known better horn in on a spot where we were catching crappie.... no reason to let idiots ruin a day like that!
