This started in December 2012 last trip of the year and we started out at 35 degrees 10 - 15 mph winds. Perfect Walleye weather then the rain and snow started. We were doing pretty good had 11 of our 12 total limit and were trying hard to limit out on the last trip of the year.
Weather turned way south on us and we called it quits! Got boat out of the water and barely up the ramp. Ramp was icing and it was getting too cold ~25 degrees rain/snow/sleet mix cold, tired and hungry, we moved everything we could from boat to truck bed and headed home. While loading, I noticed my one rod was about 1" in diameter with all the ice. Did not use the rod all day.
Got home and packed away my gear but the iced rod was still coated so I took it to the basement and set it in the shower to thaw. Forgot about for about a week and when I remembered it, I was gonna clean it up and put it to sleep for the winter. No matter how hard I tried, could not get it apart couple buddies tried with same result. Tried WD-40, a couple penetrating oils etc and no success. Put it outside for a day and tried it early AM wgile frost was still on the rod. Nothing, Still a one piece rod. Put it in the rod rack then decided to hang it upside down in the hopes that some oil would eventually seep in and loosen the connection. Tried various and sundry methods on and off all summer without success.
Fished all last fall with it and during and after every trip tried unsuccessfully to get it apart. Today, I tried another trick picked up from the internet. Wrap a frozen gel pack around the joint and let it cool for 30 minutes still no luck, but I thought it moved. Rewrapped with gel pack and finished mowing grass. Tried again and viola two piece rod again.
No force nothing just came apart like it was supposed to.
So if you ever get one stuck, you may want to try wrapping the joint with a gel pack for a good bit of time 30 - 60 minutes then try again, maybe it will help.
