Late last night I got an invite to go after some big fish on D'arbonne. Didn't take much arm twisting to get me to say yes! We got to try out some new hooks/heads Ive been making for him. Hes been saying they've been working as planned and I got to see it in action. We fished really heavy cover and never got hung up spider rigging 8 poles 20 foot deep. My first fish weighed in at 1.98 lbs. Two fish later I got one that weighed straight up 2 lbs. We caught 7 others that were a pound and half or better in that spot before the wind ran us out of there. We took refuge from the wind down by the spillway. Picked up 6 more keepers longlining there. Just the trip I needed to get me all in heat again! Of course now I see I NEED an IPILOT!

The 2 lbers were 15 1/2 inchers. I had a lil helper cleaning fish!

Russ our water temp is still about 50 degrees... Probably be the end of the month before it starts happenin. Of course that depends on the weather. I see a couple days next week are below freezing so who knows.

Rog the town is Farmerville. Its about 30 miles north of Monroe. Its the best LA lake for crappie. Limit is 50 June wasn't scared to poke at the fish eyes so I was happy!

Jungle most of them were loaded with eggs. The one that was 2 lbs wasn't really bulging so I thought it may have been a male, but when I cut it open it had a some eggs in it. Just not a ton of them.

Anyone that swears by small baits woulda croaked in our boat. We were using 1/4 oz "specials" with 2" plastics tipped with 4" minners. A red jighead was the ticket. I caught 7 of my 10 fish on it. So next time someone tells me that red disappears in water at 20 foot... Ill just say Yep! If youre lucky I might show our weedless setup. :)

I dunno nada about trolling and would be lost but maybe I need to learn. Let's see the bait! And these 4" minners.
Eyeball pulling is a good sign, Pistol poked some today. Glad daddy's girl got to share in that great time. She's gon give you fits and you'll be as bald as me.

RD- oh yeah nice looking fish. Many years ago pal and I could not get standard crappie minnows. That spring weather was awful and even the store minnows were sub standard.

We arrived at our favorite minnow seining creek only to find 8' of water whee 2' was normal. Walked swollen creek up further than usual and seen deep hole behind blown out beaver dam. Was too deep too wade so we spread the net between us. Len standing on one side of creek me on the other. Made a half hearted attempt as we really desperate at this point.

To our surprise the net was LOADED with 4-5 inch spot tail shiners. Decided that we would walleye and bass fish for the day as we could not get " crappie " sized minnows. So of course we proceeded to absolutely slay these HUGE black crappie the entire day. We were surrounded by other boats just sitting there watching us catch fish after fish. This was in a huge stump field in Pymatuning Lake. We had the perfect bait that day and the rest of the fleet did not.

Don't know why but I got idea why big minnow s work great at times. Absence of normal size minnows in that there is a bad hatch that year and they are used to feeding on the larger older minnows. Weather colder than or wetter than normal holds down or eliminates bug hatches. So the fish adapt.

Now to your up coming problem , June. Iffen I was you. I would commence to whittlin me out a rather large club out of the hardest wood you can find. It will more than likely be needed as a deterrent for a bunch of really hard-headed lads that will be smitten by you know who. My youngest daughter when growing up was a huge tomboy and was a great fishing pal UNTIL the boys noticed her and vice versa. Extra pair of eyes in back of your head probably be of help too.

Ronnie Ive got the itch for one bad! That was my first longline experience and loved it. If I get back to fishing a lot I will get one. We just did a bait design to longline in cover. I'll send ya some if they work as planned.

X 2 I-Pilot. Don't know how to longline - use it for the anchor.

Wish I knew how to catch crappie like you guys!
