I like them all but that chart. with a little orange is an awesome combo and with the red thread it looks like a doll fly that Fatman makes!! Excellent ties!!

thanks guys, been just trying different combos to see what pops, yeah, I think a redman head might even make a better jig for these plump kiptail jigs, it is amazing how slow the 1/16 head sinks in the water with this kiptail, tried it a while back in the pool and watched it sink. these jigs usually get a minnow tipped on the hook, hooked behind the lips, actually up thru the chin and out the top of the head, but not back far enough to kill it, this helps keep from tearing the hook out. I know some old timers who swear by this hair jig and minnow combo, and they catch the fish too.

Do the guys that you make them for absolutely have to have the heavy kip??? Would they drop the way you want if you cut back a bit on the hair??? Just thinking out loud here. Hope it helps.

there are several of these guys I know who use these jigs and they all have their own preferences as far as the amount of hair and how long it is, the guy that catches the biggest crappies has been using a fuller tied jig, just like my latest ones only on a roundhead 1/16, and he spider rigs alot, the other two guys like the hair a little longer and not quite as full, they use them under a bobber, and use a minnow on the hook too, matter of fact they all use a minnow on them, these last two guys jiggle the cork with their rod tip, trying not to move the cork away from it's spot, just jiggling it in place, they may see their cork move a little from s fish, and go right to jiggling it, causing the fish too take the jig for real this time.

I never cared for the heavier tied kiptail look, but when a guy shows you the jigs he has been using to catch more big crappie than anyone else you know, and they are tied full, makes you wonder what the reason is. I know that when a kiptail jig is first tied it looks alot fuller than after it has gotten wet, and especially after it has dried out again, the hair loses alot of it's crookedness and straightens out somewhat.

thanks PUP! I am a big fan of that style jig, and the simplicity of it is what makes me like it so much I think, add to that, there is something about tying with hair that just grabs me, and the durability of a hair jig, I have had guys show me original pinkie jigs in their tackle box that were over 30 years old, I know they won't last that long fishing them, but I gave some to a freind that has over 300 fish on one of them, mostly white perch during their spawning run, he refuses to use that one any more, just shows it to me every time we go fishing!! lol hook is all rusty now and some hair is broken off. lol

tied a couple last nite with a plain head, and gray hair, with a little gr. chart. down the sides, they look great for a clear water jig, clear coated the heads last nite, so I'll take a couple pics tonight. thinking about painting some heads gray and then doing some more. ya never know what is going to look right till you tie it, some of the combos you think would pop, don't and vice versa. I have had alot of luck tho with gray hair along with either pink or gr. chart. and this splash of color down the sides really works for this combo.
