Recently went through my tackle... i have plenty of 'experimental' jigs to last me through the year i think. haha!! But i do need to stock up on my simple patterns that i am pretty sure will catch some fish if they are willing to play. Buck jigs are an early season favorite of mine.

Top left is 3/8th and top right is 1/16th. Rest are 1/8th. I had decent results putting the zonker under the bucktail during late season last year.

Have been read a few articles now (In-Fish) about using mushroom shaped heads to create a seamless head/neck profile jig. Sure wish i could find some retail in smaller sizes, 1/32-1/8. TC Tackle seems to be off the map???? Can't find the company. Anyway, here are my custom shaped and grinded heads.

Then dressed a few. 1/4th on the bottom right and rest are 1/8th.

Last but not least - my 'standard' tied jig turned expirment. :s Chill49, i fould which color buck tail flairs on me - i had forgot! This dark brown tail flairs like it is belly fur....... so i tied it in and spun the top portion and trimmed it to the shape of the head as you would trim a spun hair bass bug fly. :D it seems to look ok, maybe better than the thread neck shroom heads?!?! Also put some black/pearl baitfish emulator in the center before i tied the bucktail on...

Enjoy! :) :jig:

I forgot all about this thread until today when i got out and had the chance to test the flaired jig. Thank you for the comments everyone!

Rad - That is not the place i was looking for, but good news - I found it finally! And bad news..... i don't see any shroom heads offered. I think i may have the name mixed up, have to go back and dig through my old magazines. TC Tackle has been mentioned in In-Fish before though and there is some interesting jigs to look at, check out the link - TC Tackle Custom Fishing Lures

Now on to the best part..... the flaired/spun-neck jigs work! :D This is only the 2nd time i have been out to the river this year and the 1st i have tried these jigs. Water still moving swift and looks like one of my wife's fancy coffees, but did manage to catch one! The jig has excellent action and can be fished VERY slow. This one was a 1/8th that by the time i was done shapping, it may have lost half its weight. I need to make some bigger ones to actually get farther down in current this fast......

One question Attica : Why fore is a map of my " home " lake a back drop for your photos ?

It's about time!!! I was testing you - wanted to see if you would recognize it just by the lake features and surrounding roads. :P I didn't realize the 2nd to last pic almsot spelled it out in the corner until after i took the pics.

I have a binder that was given to me with several old/faded 10"x14" (they are pretty big, not positive about that size tho) OH lake maps in it. From other maps in the collection, best i can date them to is the early 60's. Some of them have some interesting info about the lakes.... how they were made, original stocking info and tips on how to catch specific species. The maps don't do me much good since many of the lakes are not close by, but they do make cool backgrounds to pics! I saw Berlin in them and thought i should use it. :D

Russ - Not normally interested in bucktail jigs. Thats why took so long to notice. speaking of Berlin was out the other day and my main motor failed to start. Later determined I need a new starter. Will repair that tommorow when new starter gets here. Thank God for Ebay saved well over a 100 dollar bill. Evidently the local ones here have gold in them :-).

Went out with trolling motor at a blazing 2.5 mph. Kinda limited my range. Caught six crappie only three legal ones, one 14 in channel cat and 1 14 in walleye. Used microlight quantum 4 1/2 foot rods. Everything was on live minnows no action on jigs or other articial temptations. Biggest crappie was 12 in. The extremely light rods really maximized the fun. These are actually lighter than ultra light.

...Evidently the local ones here have gold in them...

'B.O.A.T. = Bring Out Another Thousand'

That doesn't sound good. :( My Dad went through 2 starters last season.... he did get compensated for the 1st one though after it burned up less than a month after the install. Hope you get back up and running. Thats why i am sticking to paddle power for now. :P

Microlight is a term i have yet to hear of.... 4.5' rod sounds like almost an ice rod. ha!
