Here is how you can make a portable jig/fly tying vice with house held items.

Things you will need:
1. Clothes pin
2. Electrical tape
3. Rubber bands
4. a stick 18 inches long
5. A file

1. First you need to file down the tip of the clothes pin down so that the whole tip is pressing together completely.
2. Now file all sides of the clothes pin down at an angle coming to a point.
3. Now take the clothes pin and tape it to the top of the stick so that the clothes pin opens and closes sideways. Tape it back and forth in an X shape so that it holds the clothes pin firmly at a slight upward angle.
4. Now take a rubber band and place it around close to the spring of the pin and make sure you twist the rubber band and rewrap it untill tight. Add another 2-3 rubber bands until desired holding strength.

Now you have a jig/fly tying vice that fits comfortably in between your legs that you can use anywhere, and all made simply with common house held materials.

No I'm not a hillbilly lol... Just wanted to make a funtional vice i could tie with while watching tv in bed :"> ... and thanks everyone... and yes pup I have checked that site out before... I just wanted to make a tutorial on how to make a tieing vice since there aren't really any out there... I actually had someone tell me that I helped them out a lot since he was going to be teaching some boy scouts how to tie and my tutorial made it possible for them to all have a vice they can keep, and that made it all worth while for me. :)

Congrats on teaching a boyscout teacher. Girlscouts and boy scouts are a good outlet for kids. A good way to teach them many things including flyfishing. That is awsome!

I'm kind of hoping that this tutorial will make it to the tutorial page on the jigcraft homepage because I think it would help a lot of kids/people in getting started in tying. *crosses fingers*

...once i get my butt in gear and update. I have a list of a few other things i am going to put up there and this is on it. ;) My boy will be old enough to start scouts this fall, and i can see this as an awsome project. Maybe for a little older age group than his, but the time will come.

perhaps cut from the same cloth... here is my 'engineered' vise i can set up in the back room at work locked in the bench vise:

A few more components needed for mine; steel rods, nuts, washers and things - but it does hold a hook and even rotates... sorta. :D
